Daniels Waterfront - City of the Arts is situated on a prominent site on Toronto’s waterfront. The program for the south block includes space for Artscape’s new Launchpad facility (40,000 sf), the George Brown College School of Design (100,000 sf), office condominiums targeted at the creative digital industry - the ‘Creative Industries Hub’ (285,000 sf), a commercial car park, and grade related retail and restaurant activities (25,000 sf).
The podium elements of the building provide an interface to the public realm and each façade provides a public and active edge. The principle building address along the south façade is from Queens Quay, reinforcing the primacy of this street. The park along the west edge will feature restaurants and retail, allowing programs to spill out and interact with the new public space. The north face will provide small scale retail establishments related directly to the anticipated use of the ‘Yard’. Service and loading access will be provided from Richardson, but the services will be contained within the building, and not be visible from the street.
Part of the site is given over to the extension of the successful Sugar Beach Park across Queens Quay. The development has been designed to meet the challenges of significant environmental constraints to create a unique structure.
